A comparison with GTX 480 Page 1 / 9 08/28/10
Introduction and Test Setup
We have already seen what the GTX 460 is capable of. One of our recent articles compared the 2GB GTX 460 with 768MB and 1GB models and some interesting results were observed. Today's article will focus on the overclocking abilities of GTX 460 2GB and how the overclocked 460s compare with stock and overclocked GTX 480s. It should be an interesting analysis.
The following setup was utilized for this article:
I7 920 @ 2.67 - 4.3 GHZ
3 X 2 GB Patriot Viper 1620 MHZ 7-8-8-20
EVGA X58 Motherboard
2 X Palit Sonic GTX 460 2 GB (Forceware 258.96)
EVGA GTX 480 (Forceware 258.96)
150 GB 10,000 RPM Velociraptor
Dell 3008 wfp 30" LCD
Antec 1200 Watt PSU
Windows 7 64 bit
We will be presenting the GTX 460 results in single and SLI card modes. The maximum overclock reached on the 460s was 850 MHZ Core and 3700 MHZ memory at 1.00V. When using in SLI mode, the peak temperatures would hit 82 deg C (15 minutes of Furmark). I am sure if an aftermarket cooling solution is used, we could go over 900 MHZ on the core and close to 4000 MHZ on the memory, but for now, we are sticking with stock cooling. In comparison, the maximum overclock attained on the EVGA GTX 480 was 900 MHZ core and 4360 MHZ memory at 1.12 V. The maximum temperature observed was 88 deg C. Again, this was done on stock cooling. However, I did have the case cover removed and a 120 MM fan blowing fresh air through the GTX 480 and GTX 460 intakes. Ok, so let us jump right into the results....
Crysis Warhead DX10
The overclocked GTX 480 is almost as fast as GTX 460 SLI. As expected, GTX 460 SLI overclocked is leading by a long way. Also notice how stock GTX 460 SLI is about 25% faster than stock GTX 480.
