   I7 920 D0 Overclocking

Pushing it to the max with Xigmatek's Thor's Hammer

Temperatures

I managed a maximum of 3.8 GHZ on the stock heat sink, at 1.18V. The temperature was getting a bit too hot for my liking though - Mid 80's for the cores. Intel recommends a maximum temperature of 67.9 Deg C for the CPU heat spreader. This translates to roughly 84 deg C for the cores. Therefore, during overclocking you would want all your cores to stay below 84 C. Xigmatek's Thor's Hammer allowed me to go beyond 4.0 GHZ. I reached 4.25 GHZ at 1.34 V. Keep in mind, that these temperatures and clocks refer to 10 minutes of prime stability plus benchmarking. I haven't yet had a chance to perform a full fledged stability test.
For now, we settled at the following system settings:

Let us take a look at how the Thor's Hammer did against the stock HSF :

The graph shows that with the stock heat sink, core temperatures get out of control around 3.8 GHZ. Xigmatek Thor's Hammer is doing very well in comparison !
The next page will show you how the Vcore varies with these frequencies.
