AMD Phenom II X4 940 Review

Phenom X4 Vs Core 2 Quad

   Page 1 / 8                                         06/07/09

Introduction

Intel has dominated the desktop CPU scene ever since the release of its Core 2 architecture as a replacement to the Pentium 4 and Pentium D CPUs. Each update to the Core 2 series has had the uper hand over AMD's competing solutions. Infact, most of the times, AMD's latest CPUs would be struggling to keep up with older generations of Core 2 Processors.

AMDs 65 nm Phenom Processors released in 2007 / 2008 failed miserably against Conroe and Wolfdale. Recently, in an attempt to gain some of its lost share in the Desktop CPU market, AMD has re branded its Phenom series and has released Phenom II CPUs. The Phenom II has undergone significant changes, the most noticeable being a 45 nm manufacturing process and 6 MB of L3 Cache vs 2 MB on the original Phenom. Phenom II CPUs, code named Deneb, come in various flavors.

Today we will be taking a look at Phenom II X4 940 and see how it stacks up against Intel's last generation high end QX9650. This compariosn will be interesting, since both processors are 45nm, feature 4 cores, and run at the same clock setting of 3.0 GHZ. However, we must not forget here that the QX9650 is old technology and ageing very quickly amidst Intel's latest I7 CPUs.
